Update On My Goofy Ideas

And Also Wishing You All A Happy New Year!

It has been a week since I hung my suet holder with a turkey sammy inside the coop and put flameless candles in to ‘light’ about 3 hours before sunrise.

Here is the scoop:  They LOVED the sammy!

I know this because it was GONE!

That made me do a mini version of my happy dance.

I decided to try a salad this time.

I stuffed the suet holder with veggies, drizzled with a bit of flax seed oil and sprinkled with some herbs.

I think they like it!

Here they are looking pretty chipper in spite of the 9 degree temperature.

Poor Riot in the center foreground is looking scraggly from her ongoing molt.

Seriously – who molts in winter? Bad plan!

There are only 5 gals in the pic because Snowball (or is it Pearl) is sitting in the next box – hopefully giving me an egg.

Speaking of eggs …………

………….. the other goofy idea was adding a bit of supplemental light via flameless pillars.  I placed them just outside the sleeping area of the coop.  So far no increase in eggs, still about ONE egg every OTHER day.

So I decided to move the pillars closer to the roosting perch.  They are now inside the sleeping area.

Note that they are placed in a zip lock bag.  I may want to ‘steal’ them back again and don’t want them full of chicken poop.

I hope you are keeping warm, happy and healthy and finding things to keep you occupied during these short, dark, cold and crappy winter days.

(That’s me being positive in case you can’t tell).

Happy 2015!
