Cock-a-Doodle-Do! My Hen is a Roo!

Nugget is the same age as Snowball and Pearl.  She is a Speckled Sussex and I got her because she was being a bully to some younger chicks my friend Tric added to her flock when Nugget was a few weeks old.

Nugget was bossy and mean to them and Tric thought a new home might make her less ‘cocky’.

Hahaha – that should have been my first clue!

It worked.  Being the new girl she was not so quick to boss my chicks around and she minded her manners.  Then I began to  suspect her original ‘cockiness’ was because she was a roo!  Her comb and wattles were much more developed than Tric’s other Speckled Sussex chicks of the same age.

Oh-oh!

The top pic is of Tric’s chicks and Nugget is in the bottom pic.

But I still did not want to see it.

Then the crowing started.

At 6:30 in the morning.

Did I mention I work the PM shift?

I don’t want a roo in my hen house so I needed  to re-home Nugget.  I don’t have the heart to actually turn her (him) into a Nugget!

Today a nice man who lives in the country came to take Nugget to his new home.  The man’s wife fell in love with the idea of having chickens and is starting a flock with about 5 hens.  She also wants a rooster.

I think Nugget will be VERY happy!
