Coop and Chicken Update

5/10:  We put the new girls in their coop!

5/17:  So far they are still afraid to use the ramp between the sleeping area and the run beneath it. They spend all their time in the hen house upper level.  We tried putting their food and water on the lower level but they wouldn’t budge so we put it back up with them so they wouldn’t starve.

Next we tried ‘shooing’ them down the ramp thinking they would go up at dusk.  Only Nugget did.  Snowball and Pearl stayed huddled in the run area.  I got home from work around midnight and since the temps were in the 40’s, I placed them back into the henhouse.

The next day I tried to tempt them down by placing fresh greens halfway down the ramp, but had no takers!

coop 0025/19:   YAY!  They all came ‘downstairs’ by themselves!  Finally – the dumb clucks!  Double YAY!  They all went up the ramp at dusk to roost!

5/24:  It has been ‘hit and miss’ with them using the ramp but at least I know they can do it.  Today we are built their pen and waited an hour to see if they would venture outside on their own.  Finally we ‘shooed’ their dumb butts down.   They seemed to love the great outdoors – it was 3 butts in the air as they pecked and nibbled tidbits off the ground.  The older girls and them mostly ignored each other except for a couple times Nugget put on quite a display through the fence  – first at Riot and then at Brewster!  Her neck was all stretched up with feathers standing straight out. She looked like those little dinos in the Jurassic Park movie!  Sometimes I wonder if that girl is a ‘roo’!?

We will probably keep the divider between the two pens permanently, there is a gate between them which we may or may not open anytime soon.

Next on our ‘coop agenda’:  finish siding the coop, build a nest box.

I have decided on a name for the new coop.  We already have ‘The Cluck Inn’ and this one will be ‘The Dumb-Cluck Inn’!
